This is a charming children's story written by JRR Tolkien for his children. It is reminiscent of the Hobbit in the language flow and alliterations. I always loved that Tolkien didn't write down to children. His writing swoops and soars and expects the reader to gallop along with him. This is a lovely little story about a little dog turned into a toy by a cranky magician, who has to go on a quest to find his way back to being a real dog again. I loved it and I recommend it to anyone who loves Tolkien as much as I do.Tags : Roverandom [J. R. R. (edited by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond) Tolkien, J. R. R. A solid 3-star book for Tolkien fans and possibly children, though a child will need a very strong reader level to understand many of the big words. This is my opinion fwiw. I think Tolkien was trying very hard to write a children's story. The introduction clearly states he wrote it for his son who had lost a toy on the beach. But the writing will be a challenge for most kids younger than 7th grade unless they are gifted readers with a strong vocabulary. I read this to my 10- and 11-year old daughters who are above-average A/B honor roll students but it was slow going in some passages as we had to look up words (I do this to increase their vocabularies). Not really a book a kid would enjoy reading on their own, in my opinion.
I enjoyed the story itself and all the references to other works. Tolkein's humor and imagination are incredible! Recommend this book to anyone who enjoys his work.
I was pleasantly surprised by this cute story. You know when you like an author's books so much that you have high hopes for their other works? This one, happily doesn't fall short. It's full of entertaining little adventures and interactions between wizards and dogs and other creatures. It's no Lord of the Rings, but still a fun read!
I believe this was published after his death, but it is full of Tolkien"s imagination. This was the book he wrote after Hobbit, but is about an entirely different setting. I loved it and just wish I still had young children to read it to.
Cute dog story full of whimsy and oddments. This edition had lots of background info about the circumstances in the writing of this novel. Plus there were insights at the end about some of the terms and phrases used. I found the entire book delightful.
Tolkien's writing is magical, as I've discovered before in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. One could see how Roverandom, a much earlier work of his, has laid the foundations of his celebrated and most remembered magical world, Middle Earth. This book is a children's fairy tale, but that wouldn't stop any fantasy-loving adult out there from enjoying it.
I read this book aloud to my 7 year old daughter and 5 year old son and we all thought it was a delightful little book! Tolkien created this story for the entertainment of his own children and you can feel that joy coming through the pages. It's a wonderful little fairy tale about a little dog and his big adventures. If you're looking for a sweet, adventurous read-aloud for your family, I highly recommend it!
