This book was recommended to me as an exciting read. I kept waiting for the excitement, right up to the last page. Then I started asking myself, "What is there in this book that might possibly interest anyone? Why?"
This book could have been called "Shallower," because, as any artifact is an expression of the psyche that crafted it, this book represents the ego's rejection of experience and wisdom.
Ego, involved in non-[re]productive sensual thrills in an inappropriate time and place, wipes out the wise old woman of experience archetype, so the evil old man, a rootless character with an unbecoming visage, takes revenge by causing ego to waste away. (If this were a Chinese book, it would be a lot thinner, because ego would simply find a monk or sorcerer to undo the spell. No big deal. Many sections of this book confused me until I realized it was supposed to be scary.)
The book is indicative of King's psyche, and the book's popularity accords with modern American taste: fun above maturity. I strongly doubt that many people will find the book worth reading when another generation brings its particular mindset to the scene. What I call good art strikes a chord with surface, contemporary concerns, a deeper, personal psychology, *and* bottomless, eternal mind.
Okay, maybe we shouldn't ask too much of a Stephen King thriller (art? art? ), but really! Can't you find something better to do with your time?

It is a very discriptive book. The author could have made it a little less discriptive and worried about the storyline and how he could make the book harder to put down by the reader.
I'm generally a big Stephen King but I found this one a little thin (I couldn't resist). If you're a fan too you might as well read it it's not horrible. If it's your first King novel try The Shining.
Thinner is one of King's best works. The plight of those who "cross" the old gypsy are absolutely gross and creepy, but we also know that they are fitting punishments....This book is the most fast paced of King's novels, it is very riveting and there's not a dull moment. Its a must.
One day I am going to write something akin to Cliffnotes for Stephen King novels. His last 200 or so novels can be summed up in a few words each. Let me save you some trouble...a man hits a gypsy with a car. As a result , a curse is placed on him. He loses weight and tries to find the guy who put him on this diet.Then he does. The end. This book comes in handy when Nitol doesn't do the trick.
The Bachman books, while not big sellers AS Bachman books, are still a good read. The characters have great depth and there is always that element of suspense that keeps you from putting the book down. As Stephen King pointed out, the disparity in sales when the books were identified as Bachman's and when it came out that they were King books is astonishing. I would have been just as loyal a follower of Bachman if I had never found out these authors were one and the same. I have been hooked on King books ever since I was at camp in MN when I was 13 and a kid gave me Different Seasons. My mom read it and forbade me to ever read anything like that again and here I am now-I have an extensive King library and read them all over and over again. Except Pet Sematary cause it scares the HELL out of me. ) I heartily recommend this set of books, they're all top notch except for Roadwork, and Thinner is a masterpiece.
